When I was a child, my grandmother or my friends' mothers sometimes made them. They were small handmade items that could once be found in everyday Japanese life.
These crafts combine natural shijimi shells, once used for soup stock, with small scraps of fabric. They embody the Japanese spirit of “mottainai.”
While looking for a way to highlight the iridescent colors of Chichibu-Meisen silk, I remembered this simple craft. By wrapping the shell with the fabric, the shifting colors of the textile become visible on a small curved surface.
Although Meisen silk is not particularly suitable for wrapping shells because it has little stretch, the result is a charming little accessory that transforms kimono fabric into something new.
